The color TV…….

This was in the beginning of the 70’s and my sister, brother and I usually watched the kids’ shows on TV after dinner. We had an old black and white TV, it was brown and made of some kind of wood. We had heard about a new thing called color TV and was constantly nagging on our parents to buy one. Everyone else (familiar?) had one and it was so unfair……..
The truth was that in the beginning they were very expensive and perhaps something that wasn’t a priority in a family with 3 kids. Anyway we continued to watch our kids' shows on our very old and old fashioned TV ;-)
Then one day when we got home from school my dad said – Kids next Friday when you come home from school there is going to be a color TV here. Yippee!!! You can imagine the sound level in our house at that point. Never in my life have I experienced such a long long week. Every day I asked what time it should come, what it would look like and so on. My sister and brother did the same and our parents were so tired of hearing us asking the same thing over and over again.
The days passed so slowly and then it was Thursday before the big day. Oh I couldn’t sleep and I fantasized about how it would be to see all TV shows in color. To be able to see clothes, interiors and everything really, in COLOR!! When I took of to school on Friday morning it felt as I was flying……. I told everyone of my friends of the “event” that was going to happen at our place that afternoon. I think you can feel how the excitement was flowing in me at this point.
Finally the day had passed and I was sitting on the school bus on my way home. Just 5 stops more, only 3 stops left and finally, I was home. When I got in through the door my brother and sister came running. They screamed we have a color TV, it is here already. I noticed the door to our sitting room was closed and asked why. Well you can all go in there together after you had your afternoon snack. I felt like I was sitting on needles and couldn’t wait for the others to get ready.
At last!!!! We were allowed in to the sitting room and there it was………….
A hideous pink TV, it was our old one with new paint. At that point you could hear a needle drop. And then the chaos broke out.....
Can you imagine the scene? Three kids that have been waiting a whole week for the COLOR TV and then there was a piglet pink TV in the corner. The old TV painted by our dad during the day.
After a while when we finally had settled down, he smilingly asked us if we liked the new TV?
Or... he said with a big smile. Do you think you’ll like the color TV that arrives at 5 o’clock better?
Well that’s my dad…………………
Ps. A baby picture of me helps me with the vision today.

That's just mean. But too funny!! Thanks for the morning laugh, Frida! You were such a cutie!! :) I remember very well watching TV on our b&w and I thought we were the only family who didn't have a color TV - oh, the horror of it all. I guess we survived, didn't we?
great post and yes i so remember everyone else having color, cable, you name it, everything else before we did -- funny thing is, i turned into that kind of mom -- you know, where everyone else had cable, cell phones, computers (and jif peanut butter according to my then 12 y.o. daughter) before we did...
Love this story!!! I - too - remember the excitement and anticipation of getting our first color TV..and especially discovering that the land of Oz was actually in 'color'.
Your father has a great sense of humor...FUN!!!
LOL, too funny. I must admit we were first with colortv, my dad loved new stuff like that. I've got slides of the test card (had to find that word in de dictionary), that's how proud he was. haha
Ohhhh, what a cutie-pie, Frida! I could "steeze the squffings" out of you! I wonder how old you were when this happened and if he was a practical joker in other situations. After awhile you'd catch on, right? Well, I never saw it coming...the pink TV. It's actually a darling story, just like you. :D
Lol! Thanks for the smile, Frida :) It took my parents somentimes too before getting a new color tv. I remember running at my aunt's next door to watch her color TV! Thanks for bringing back such lovely memories... Adorable little girl in your image, btw! :)
Oh my gosh Frida, I am laughing out loud! What a wonderful story to share with us and what fun you must have had growing up. And the photo is too adorable ... just want to snuggle those cute little cheeks! Thanks for making me smile today!
peace to you ...
Your words make me travel back to the same occasion in our home. My parents just said that they had a big surprise for us on a certain day. Like you I waited all day and I already knew what it was. *not* I had for so long wished for an aquarium (fish tank). When the tv was carried in the house in a HUGE brown box I was sure that my aquarium had arrived. So our new colour tv was noting but a big disappointment. :-))
I like yr dad! He's not so far from my own. But that's a long story.
xo Mia
Ps. I was not a spoiled child, just special, who liked(s) animals more than tv's. ;-) Ds.
Priceless story!! I so enjoyed reading this. It could have been a little trick executed by my own father, he was joking around all the time as well. Often he collaborated with mom, and both of them were real experts! THe picture is just too cute! Thanks for sharing!!

Great story. Last week in Niagara Falls New York we were driving near the small airport and there are a lot of run down motels. One had a crooked sign advertising colour tv. We laughed at the thought of choosing a motel because it offered the rarity of a colour tv. Times have changed as I watch tv on my iphone now!
What a fun memory! I remember watching Captain Kangaroo on our little black and white tv. All of a sudden there was some static--and we were sure it had turned to color for just a moment! We tried and tried to convince my dad--"We really, truly have color tv!"
this is the best story. what a character your dad must have been!!
hilarious story!! your father had quite the sense of humour :) - although i'm sure at the time laughing was not what you had in mind!!
What a joker! Was it an April Fool's joke? I'll bet you have many more stories about you dad that bring a smile to your face...
