Love, Romance & Adventure, The Beginning

The fabulous Eliza Deacon and a fellow collaborator at Vision and Verb sent me a photo of her mother this week. She described her life as a world traveler, cowgirl, model and actor. It was a life filled with romance and romance will make me leave the skin I’m in and go to another place all together.

Romance isn’t always sheathed in a love story but that certainly is the conventional story line. There is nothing more romantic than the beautiful damsel in distress being rescued by her knight in shining armor. It is every girl’s dream and hopefully we will be rescued while wearing a beautiful white gown. After all, Prince Charming woke up the beautiful Sleeping Beauty in his bejeweled velvet cape and long boots.

As I matured, the notion of romance became something different. It became the smell of a grove of olive trees, a dark and hazy summer night, or the life of a lone cowgirl…

I’ve always wanted to write a book. It would be full of adventures, exotic places and romance.

The first chapter would be start like this…

“She heard the voices from far away, the whisperings like a humming birds wings, softly resting on her ears. She felt tired, her body an amalgam of exhaustion and feebleness. She couldn’t recall any familiarity in her surroundings; the voices bore no resemblance to any memories that that she could conjure.

As she slowly came into consciousness, she swallowed and coughed weakly, her throat dry and on fire. A weathered hand brought a cup to her lips, the coolness of the water a welcoming contrast to the stifling heat.

She took a small sip and resisted the urge to gulp down the cool life-saving drink, somehow knowing that a too large drink would be rejected. The weathered hand took the cup away and gentle voice spoke in a lyrical tone, speaking a language she didn’t understand. However the inflection at the end of the sentence made her realize that she was being asked a question. She looked up and saw an Asian woman dressed in white nurse’s garb looking at her inquiringly. The nurse asked her again. She shook her head, "I don't know," she thought, "I don't know."

She shifted and the firmness of the surface was unyielding, it didn’t give as she moved. She realized from the squatting position of the nurse that she was laying on the floor, the nurse hovered and crouching over her.

She tried desperately to gather her bearings. She looked around to see something, anything familiar that would tell the story of her present situation. Her eyes rested on a knapsack and satchel in the corner. Attached to the outer pocket was a pink key chain. The memory came flooding back and she knew where she was. Her body started to shake uncontrollably as it became consumed with sobs.”

And that, my friends, is how I would start my story. It doesn’t have an ending but I know what the middle holds. I just have to write it…

You're such a tease, Puna, admit it. A romanitic at heart, for sure. I like how your notion of romance changed as you matured...the smell of a grove of olive trees.... Now THAT is romantic. Good for you. Just do it. Just write it! It looks like you already have a line-up waiting for you to finish. :)
