a world win time
September 20, 2010 * * * * * Posted by:
Kelly
I spent most of this past weekend in the car with my family, zipping by miles and miles of trees just starting to change color. Fall is here, but I was there, in Boston, watching baseball.
I had never been to Boston before, although I stayed just outside it once, watching my husband play softball. But this was my first time inside the city, walking along the harbor, visiting Quincy Market, getting lost on the way to our hotel near Fenway Park.
After my husband impressed me by actually stopping to ask for directions, we checked in and set out on a stroll through the Longwood neighborhood, me looking up most of the time. I am always looking up when I go to new places, I think because I love architecture. And then we were standing beneath the Green Monster, and, of course, I had to look up at that. Very impressive, indeed.
We stopped at The Lansdowne for snacks and a drink, and I wished then that I had my other camera, because there is a brick wall inside that looks like an abstract American flag, but I knew my point and shoot wasn’t going to cut it. (Or maybe I was just too tired to get up and take a picture at that point.)
And then it was time for the game and we walked past the House of Blues that I kind of wished we could go into, and we went to the top of the Green Monster to look down. Baseball, hot dogs, peanuts and cracker jacks….I love the smell of baseball.
And it was a perfect baseball kind of night, around 70 degrees, not too cool but not too warm, and we watched the game and the hardcore fans, and we laughed at some of their antics, especially when the guy behind us decided to take off his shirt and flex his muscles for the girls behind him. Which wouldn’t have been so funny except those muscles were well-hidden under several layers of um, padding.
In the row in front of us sat a group of girls having a bachelorette party, the bride with a veil dangling from the back of her baseball cap. There was a lot of giggling and flirting and joking going on there.
I noticed all of these things, but my husband did not, he's also a hardcore fan and his eyes were glued to the game, seeing his team live is such a thrill. He was not quite so thrilled with the score, not a win for the Red Sox, but I didn’t mind so much, it was still fun to be there, to take it all in, to watch the people enjoying themselves, this huge crowd all hoping for the same thing. Well, except for the Blue Jay fans behind us.
And then we went back to our hotel, exhausted but happy, and got up early the next morning to drive back home. I swear the leaves were even more colorful after just one day.
Years ago, someone sent me an article for a newsletter I was working on that included the phrase “it was a world win time.” Meaning, of course, whirlwind. I chuckled at this error, but for some reason it stuck in my brain. And this weekend, even though we spent most of it in the car and our team lost, it felt very much indeed like a world win time.

Sounds like a perfectly fun weekend!! So sorry I missed you on this 'world win' trip!!! In another couple of weeks..the leaves will be changing here as well. Something about the ocean effect...and how that slows the color transformation down.
And - I just love the image. The juxtaposition of the harbor scene backdropped by Fenway Park is terrific. Like a dream! So very creative!!!
what a great time! any road trip, to any where, just tell me when to be ready.
Hey Kelly, sounds like a good time was had by all! I love that image, too. We all look at so many photos now but still come across ones like this ... sure made me stop and look ... and the "world win" makes me smile!
i read a lot about this topic in the last few days and i consider it might be true. Eventhough i think everyone is responsible for himself. Just my
Love it! Like that t-shirt - envision whirled peas (peas in a blender with a peace symbol on it!). I love a road trip. Your image is amazing ...
Oh yes, Kelly. THIS IS BASEBALL. The smell of it. I love how you said that. Having lived in Atlanta for 22 years, I know exactly what you're talking about. We didn't feel right if we didn't go to at least one Braves game per season. Actually, if I'm gonna watch baseball, I'd rather see it on TV. Being at the game in real life is too dang distracting, as you noticed. Your image is magical. YAY for baseball and this "world win" time. Hmmm. Now I need to go check and see how the Braves are doing these days.... :)
I, too, live in Atlanta and just last week went to our first Braves game in a few years. Great seats and there's nothing like eating a hotdog and having a beer when in a ballpark. I LOVE your image!!

Ginnie...we're second to the Phillies in the National League!
I love baseball. When I was in New York I went see the Yankees. I went with a friend who had never been to a baseball game before, she often goes to soccer games in Holland and she was amazed by the public. At home at soccer games, everybody has their eyes on the game and only on the game, but at the baseball game to her it seemed to look more like families having picknick and only incidently watching the game.
The image is awesome.
what a great weekend....
i haven't been to boston in years.....and how lucky you were to notice other things besides the game. they get so long and boring.
I had a world win time with my family this weekend - it was wonderful! It did not include baseball (thank goodness!), but did include wine. Fun image, Kelly!
Love the "world win" phrase. Might have to borrow that one! :)
Your PS skills are AMAZING! Cool image.
Now, regarding baseball...I'm a big fan of the crowd watching part but not so much a fan of the game. I've been told that I simply don't understand the finesse of the game. *sigh*
Sounds like you had fun!
how lovely to read about boston!!!! :) I lived there for a short time many years ago and i loved it! :)
What a nice day! I love that your husband stopped and asked directions. All men should be as evolved:)
What a nice weekend and I love your picture. Regarding baseball I'm more of a roaring motor kind of girl :-)
