    Your vision only

Today I'm going to let you to your own vision and words. Take your time for yourself and let your inner vision to be your guide.

Imagine that you step into an old library, full of old, precious and unique books. You walk from shelf to shelf, touching them, holding them in your hands and glancing through a few. When you close your eyes, you smell the air around you, filled with fragrance of old inks. It’s a moment when your thoughts take you back to ‘the old’ times, to the memories from your childhood.

You choose a book from a shelf and take it to a comfy armchair. And when you sit down, you put it on your lap and open it. An old story takes your mind into another World, where you meet different characters and creatures, see colorful scenes and places.

Although everything is written in the book, there’s still an open space for you and your vision to imagine and see the story with your own eyes. In a movie, there’s a little space for your own imagination. Everything is set: the scenes, the look of the characters, the words and gestures, sound effects… But the books let you do that yourself. You can create your own ‘movie’, and when you read the book a second time, you can create a different scene, ‘another’ vision of your own.

Remember this when you are with your children. Read them from the books, let them use their own imagination instead of the one on TV, created to manipulate with their minds and thoughts. Take your children to a library, let them touch the books, smell them, explore the World described in the books…
And let yourself to do the same.
Let your vision be the guide. Take time to see the World from your perspective, create your own story, choose your own verbs. Take time for yourself and for your vision only. Be You!

This is exactly why reading is so powerful, we are in control of the World we create through the words we read. Giving the love of reading to our children is in my view the best gift we can offer them. Vision will be their guide the same way it is ours.
    So well said, Jozika :-)

So thoughtful and beautifully said. Reading - sadly - is becoming a lost 'art'..and with it I do fear we lose the ability to visualize and imagine. It's been awhile since I found myself lost in and amongst the library stacks. You've reminded me to re-visit.
    Thank-you!!!

it has been about 25 years since i took my children to a library, but i do have all the memories of rooms of books opening doors to adventure and inquiry. i hope that ipads won't replace libraries, but who knows, right? your post and wonderful image surely gratifies and delights the reader/writer in us all.

what a pleasant way to begin the weekend. thank you. what are you reading right now?

There was a day not too long ago (it seems) when the library in our town was almost as important as our house and church. To be honest, I love walking into a Barnes & Noble these days, when I'm back Stateside, to see what new books are out...and what old books are still lurking in between. There really IS something about books. It's the smell of leather on the old ones for me. My dad had lots of them in his library and I would go to smell and touch them.

With Kindle and iPad these days, I wonder if libraries and book stores are suffering? I haven't a clue....but I wonder. Thanks, Jozica, for the reminder to get lost in a good book once again!

Jozica, these are words for my soul. Reading to someone and being read to...that is manna for the imagination. Being able to create an image from what you hear is such a joy. Thank you for that reminder. It is why I never watch a film after I've read the book. Holding books in my hand and smelling the paper and the ink are what keep me from going to kindle or any other method of reading that is electronic. I look forward to this evening when I will be curling up with a glass of red and the book I am currently reading or maybe I'll opt for some herbal tea. Wonderful post!

I feel like my book is yet to be written. For some reason, this feels like a temporary season to me and discovery is still ahead. It's so exciting!

I love books, and although I am a "techie" have little interest in the digital format for reading I read lots of books and it's quite common for me to pick up a book and read it from cover to cover, forgetting to do anything else until I am finished. It can be rather an expensive habit, at a book a day, fortunately I've recently discovered our local library, a hidden gem, which now keeps me stocked with a constant and changing stack besides the bed - all paid for by our (exorbitant) property taxes!

I love reading too, but i must admit that I like the ebooks. So easy to carry around.

I only recently began reading the lovely words here, and quickly found that I can't wait to read what comes to my inbox from Vision and Verb. This post, however, is my favorite to date. You give a much needed message here about reading, not only to our children, but to ourselves. I appreciate the advances in technology, too, but give me a book any day. Let me feel the weight of it in my hands and inhale those aromas you speak of. There is nothing better than seeing in my own mind the images that the story creates.

What a lovely post and sentiment...I just spent some time with my nieces where we read aloud some stories from Grimm's Fairy Tales...their imaginations astounded me...

I just came back from visiting the library with my daughter! We do that once a week, after school, usually on Fridays when there is no pressing homework. I love libraries and I remember that as a child I could spend several hours there. I sometimes still dream of the library of my childhood.

Thank you, ladies, for your comments. I'm glad there are still some of us who like the books in our hands and love to go to the libraries, bookstores.
@Anyes - yes, I could see that books do have influence on kids, so I agree, that's the best gift we can give to the children.
@Honey - I just came from the Library. Most of the books are about creative techniques which I need for my school work with kids, but there are usually a few books at my bedside for my inspiration, this time it's a book by Jean Giono: "L'Homme qui Plantait Des Arbres" (= A men who planted trees) - a simple, beautiful book that I could read again and again.
@Deborah - thank you so much, Deborah, I'm honored. :)
@Sherry, I hope you had a nice evening with a good book.
@Carola - I'm sure your daughter will have the same dreams when she grows up :).

Stepping into a room full of old books would be heaven for me. I love the touch and feel of books and find it therapeutic to turn the pages. I have always got several books on the go at once.

yes, i started reading to my son when he was a tiny infant, i think it is so important to open that world up to them at an early age.
love your photo, love the possibilities within all those covers...

I absolutely love book stores and libraries. I can go there just to "smell" the books. Sounds corny I know but that's the truth.
